The small farming village of La Chapelle d’Abondance is located in the Haute-Savoie, an hour and a half drive from Geneva airport. The Abondance valley is a fertile mountain pasture area where the sound of cowbells reminds us that the famous local cheese is produced here. La Chapelle is a great place to be in all seasons.
In winter, the village is one of the twelve stations of the Portes du Soleil ski area with its 650 km of marked slopes, cross-country ski trails and snowshoe routes. In summer, the mountains invite you to go hiking, mountain biking and picnicking. The village is also an excellent starting point for excursions to Geneva, Lausanne, Martigny with its Roman amphitheatre, the Rhone Valley, the salt mines of Bex, Lake Geneva with the Chillon castle and its medieval fishing villages. The thermal baths of Val-d’Illiez and Lavey-Les-Bains are wonderful places to relax. In La Chapelle itself, there are good restaurants where you can indulge in local dishes such as Berthoud, raclette or tartiflette.
Summer in La Chapelle d’Abondance
The warm summers in Haute Savoie offer ample opportunity for hiking in the mountainous region on the border of Switzerland and France. The numerous mountain passes in the area can be conquered by road bike, and there are marked trails for mountain bikers of all levels. Those looking to cool off can do so at or in Lac Léman. The town of Thonon hosts its annual theater festival, Les Fondus du Macadam, and in the city of Évian, you can enjoy the Acro Festival.
Winter in La Chapelle d’Abondance
Skiing all day without having to sit in the same lift? That is possible in the large Portes du Soleil ski area, 650 km of slopes on the border of France and Switzerland. La Chapelle d’Abondance is part of this ski paradise. Not only advanced skiers, but also beginners will get their money’s worth here. La Chapelle is a quiet farming village. Yet it offers all the facilities for skiers, cross-country skiers and those interested in culinary delights.
The Appartment
This fully equipped apartment for 4-5 people in the hamlet of Le Ryz is situated in a very quiet location. The kitchen/diner has a microwave oven and an induction cooktop. The small bedroom has a double bed. The sofa in the living room can easily be converted into a double bed. A bunk bed is located in what the French call a “coin montagne,” meaning in the hallway. There is a toilet and a bathroom with a bath/shower.The sun loungers on the sunny balcony invite you to sunbathe while enjoying an exciting book and a delicious local wine.
The road behind the chalet leads up into the mountains, to the small mountain lake Lac d’Arvoin, among others. A two-hour climb rewards you with absolute tranquility at an altitude of 1663 meters. Don’t forget to pick up some fresh herb cheese from the goat farm along the way.
